The Faculty of Humanities of the University of Silesia runs the European Master in Lexicography (EMLex), which is jointly implemented by eight academic institutions from Europe and Africa:

  • University of Silesia in Katowice (Poland),
  • Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (Germany),
  • Károli Gáspár Református Egyetem Budapest (Hungary),
  • Université de Lorraine (Nancy, France),
  • Universidade do Minho (Braga, Portugal),
  • Università degli Studi Roma Tre (Italy),
  • Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (Spain),
  • Stellenbosch University (South Africa).

EMLex is a specialisation offered within the second-cycle studies, which has won an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree grant. The classes, delivered in German and English, are addressed to students who wish to deepen their knowledge of theoretical and practical lexicography. As part of the study programme, students improve their language competences in practical foreign language classes. They spend the second or third semester abroad at a partner university. Candidates with a bachelor's or master's degree in philology or applied linguistics, with German and English language skills at B1/ B2 level, can apply for EMLex.

The studies provide an opportunity to learn the principles of the lexicographer's workshop and state-of-the-art computer techniques. Graduates are prepared to work in scientific and commercial publishing houses, in the field of compiling traditional and electronic dictionaries, from concept development to its (also technical) implementation. They have competences that are useful in editorial work, data selection and compilation, working with corpora, databases, etc., and in professional development. Their knowledge and skills are also useful for work in the education sector, media, cultural institutions and industry and large companies in the service sector. Their education, which has a solid theoretical base, also enables them to undertake work of an academic nature. As part of the study programme, students undertake internships, often choosing foreign companies or scientific institutes, including those outside Europe, such as Canada, Israel or South Africa.
